Another Successful Sandcastle Competition!

Known to us as Mrs Whitley Bay, June Tolson has been a valued member of the Chamber Committee for many years. One of her projects during her time on the team has been the planning and organisation of the annual Sandcastle Competition. We asked June for her thoughts on this year's event.

The Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade’s 16th Sandcastle Competition, supported by North Tyneside Council, was off to a good start on Sunday 11 August. Participants started arriving from 9.30am, although registration didn’t commence until 10.00am, but lots of eager beavers keen to get started.

Children, families and groups of friends as always had the opportunity to build either a sandcastle or a sand sculpture. There were many varying examples of great medieval style sandcastles as well as sculptures such as, the famous Dome, hippo, cat and mouse, dragon, sphinx and many more.

A big thank you goes to Startastic Entertainment Characters. Children and parents enjoyed having their photographs taken with them.  Izzy’s face painting, and Turners Funfair supplied Shuggy boats and NTC and Bay Uke supplied the music.

June was amazed with the high quality of sandcastles and sand sculptures:

“The weather was on our side, it couldn’t have been better. It has been another great turnout for our annual free to enter competition and it is a pleasure to see so many children, friends and families enjoying themselves.

This event could not continue without the support of our local community and families who come out of the area to enter this competition, with some as far as Sheffield, Leicester. Help and assistance is given free by our Chamber members, and friends.”

Over 800 participants took part, with over 180 sandcastles and sand sculptures created on the day.

The Whitley Bay Sandcastle Competition was another huge success, it proved to be a great fun day for all.

We wonder what next year will bring?

Photographs from the event are available via the Chamber's Our Whitley Bay page on Facebook.

There were few lost property items, and these were handed to Rendezvous Café for safe keeping.
