Whitley Bay Chamber celebrates community victory

WHITLEY BAY, 2 FEBRUARY 2026 - The Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade is delighted to announce a major success for local businesses and residents, following North Tyneside Council’s decision to reverse its plans to introduce parking charges at Whitley Bay Playhouse car park and to shelve additional proposed costs for resident parking permits.

The reversal follows overwhelming public opposition, with over 3300 supporters adding their names to the Chamber’s petition – an increase from the 3100 signatures submitted with the formal objection last week. This groundswell of support demonstrates the strength of community feeling and the shared determination to protect the accessibility and vibrancy of the town.

Scott Glazebrook, Chair of Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade, said:

“This is fantastic news for Whitley Bay. The Council’s decision to withdraw these proposals is a clear reflection of what can be achieved when a community stands together. More than 3300 people took the time to make their voices heard and this outcome belongs to each and every one of them.

Our businesses, residents and visitors rely on fair and accessible parking. These proposals risked undermining local trade and placing unnecessary pressure on households. We are grateful that the Council has listened carefully to the concerns raised and responded with a decision that supports the future of our town.

I’d also like to point out that the Chamber spearheaded this petition from day 1, after it became clear that our members were very concerned at the proposals which were announced out of the blue and without fanfare. Our Committee team of 4 volunteers worked tirelessly to spread the word within very tight timeframes and I am so pleased with this positive outcome for our local independent businesses and residents who continue keep the town alive despite some very challenging times.”

The Chamber also acknowledges the ongoing efforts of community partners, including local businesses such as The Avenue café, which played a vital role in enabling residents without internet access to take part in the petition.

The Chamber will continue to monitor any future parking strategy proposals and will maintain open communication with all parties to ensure that the needs of the business community and local residents remain at the forefront of decision making.
