Press release regarding proposed parking changes

WHITLEY BAY CHAMBER OF TRADE EXPRESSES "DEEP DISAPPOINTMENT" OVER PROPOSED PARKING CHARGES

WHITLEY BAY, 21 JANUARY 2026 - The Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade has today issued a formal statement expressing the significant concerns of its members regarding North Tyneside Council’s proposal to introduce parking charges at The Playhouse and Park Road car parks.

Following council notifications, the Chamber reports a clear consensus: the introduction of these charges risks undermining the ongoing economic recovery and regeneration of Whitley Bay’s town centre.

Scott Glazebrook, Chair of Whitley Bay Chamber and local business owner, commented:

“Many of our members are deeply disappointed by these plans. At a time when small businesses are navigating high operating costs and trying to encourage residents to ‘shop local’, the introduction of parking fees creates a physical and financial barrier to our high streets.

We have previously collaborated with the Council on initiatives to boost footfall, so to now see permanent charges proposed at these key locations feels like a step backwards. This move risks driving shoppers to out-of-town retail parks where parking remains free.”

The Chamber highlights several critical concerns:

·       Economic Impact: Even modest changes can deter short-stay "convenience" shoppers who are the lifeblood of independent retailers.

·       Traffic Displacement: The move is likely to push vehicles into nearby residential streets, increasing congestion and frustration for locals.

·       Timing: The proposal comes during a critical phase of Whitley Bay’s regeneration, potentially stalling the momentum gained by local traders.

Additionally, the Chamber is supporting residents and business owners who are concerned about changes to the parking permit system, which could result in higher costs for those who rely on it – potentially forcing residents to pay for parking they cannot even use.

The Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade is calling on North Tyneside Council to halt the implementation of these charges and engage in a meaningful dialogue with the business community to find a solution - such as a "maximum stay" limit or “chargeable after 2 hours” - that manages parking turnover without penalising local commerce.

The Chamber encourages all residents and business owners to submit their formal objections to the Council before the January 29th deadline. The organisation is also leading an online petition at https://www.change.org/whitleybayparking and urges everyone who cares about Whitley Bay’s future to show their support.
